The PCAN Curriculum?

This curriculum offers infant/family professionals concepts and information focused on helping them to recognize the importance of their relationships with very young children and their parents in reducing some of the risk factors associated with abuse and neglect.  The PCAN curriculum fills a unique niche by focusing on the prevention of child abuse and neglect.  It goes beyond the typical mandated reporter training currently provided to child care professionals.

Purpose of the Training

The PCAN training and curriculum gives trainers resources with which to prepare infant/family professionals to play a role in the primary prevention of child maltreatment. The hallmark of the approach is to help infant/family professionals to purposefully use their every day relationships with parents to build “protective factors” into their programs. Research shows that protective factors, such as providing a welcoming atmosphere for parents or offering resources on early childhood development, can help to lower the risk of child abuse and neglect.

You will learn strategies for

  • Preventing abuse and neglect of infants and toddlers
  • Working effectively with infants, toddlers and their families
  • Recognizing the role of culture in working with very young children and their families
  • Supporting directors in helping staff create partnerships with parents

Who should attend?

Experienced trainers with expertise in early care and education, early intervention, child welfare, mental health and/or physical health.

What will you receive?

  • Two or Three days of interactive, experiential instruction
  • 10-unit curriculum, with 60 hours of content allowing you to offer workshops from 1 - 6 hours in length.
  • Schedules, handouts, background readings, reference lists, PowerPoint slides, and video vignettes:everything you need to create dynamic, meaningful workshops for infant/family professionals.
