Abel Covarrubias, MA, is a ZERO TO THREE Fellow. He is the chief executive officer for Aprendamos Intervention Team, a program providing early intervention services in Dona Ana County in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
He also oversees several other clinics for children including Esperanza Children’s Clinic, Mariposa Autism Service Center, and Alegria Family Counseling. He is the lead administrator for the 3rd Judicial Dona Ana County Infant Mental Health Team. He has a master’s degree in special education/communication disorders from New Mexico State University. Abel is actively involved in various boards, including Hearts for Autism, First Step Center, Jardin de Los Niños, Health Advisory Council, US Bank Community Advisory Board, and the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico. Abel is co-founder of the Hearts for Autism Fund at the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico, which is dedicated to supporting children and families with an autism spectrum disorder. He is a Paul Harris Fellow/Rotary Foundation of Rotary International and received the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico Salud Award for his significant and outstanding commitment to improve health care in Southern New Mexico. Recently, Aprendamos Intervention Team received the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce 2013 Business of the Year award under the leadership of Mr. Covarrubias. Abel is passionate about philanthropy and has completed mission trips to Ecuador and Nicaragua. Abel enjoys running half marathons during his spare time. He also enjoys spending time with his wife, Monica, and his three amazing daughters. His favorite quote is one by Mother Teresa: “It is not how much we do, but how much love we put in the doing. It is not how much we give, but how much love we put in the giving.”
