Axes (also, multiaxial system)

A multiaxial system refers to different dimensions of functioning that influence a diagnosis. There are five axes in the DC:0–5 classification system:

Caregiving environment
|
The web of caregiving relationships, whether in the same household or not, surrounding the infant/young child which might include co-parenting relationships, siblings, and other important family relationships that affect the infant’s/young child’s development.

|
Comorbidity
|
The existence or presence of more than one disorder at the same time.
|
|
Crosswalk
|
A mechanism or approach to comparing content from one system to another.
|
|
Cultural formulation
|
A cultural formulation is the part of the assessment process that enables a provider to appreciate the many ways in which a child’s development and behavior are shaped by cultural practices and values.

Developmental competence/Competencies
|
Demonstrated ability to navigate developmentally appropriate or expected social, emotional, cognitive, language, and physical/motoric tasks
|
|
Nosology
|
A classification or list of disorders.
