SPARROW Helps Children Cope with an Injured Caregiver

cover of Sparrow book with parent bird holding baby bird in wing

“Sparrow” is designed to support a young child whose parent/caregiver has been injured, physically or emotionally, while on deployment. The book explores themes relating to loss, healing, hope, resilience, and, ultimately, the power of parent-child love. It is connectedness that helps young children and their families cope with challenging events and circumstances.

ZERO TO THREE author, Dorinda Silver Williams, LCSW-C, has developed a third book for very young children. Sparrow is designed to support a young child whose parent/caregiver has been injured, physically or emotionally, while on deployment.

Sparrow (Mama version) tells the story of a young bird whose beloved parent has been away on a long journey. When Mama finally returns home, young Sparrow notices that she seems different. Mama is tired and weary and her wing is clipped. Mama and young Sparrow cannot fly together like they used to do. Everything is so different that young Sparrow begins to wonder if Mama’s feelings for him have changed as well. Mama reaches out, offering Sparrow the assurance that he needs; Mama loves Sparrow, now and always. Sparrow learns that although he and Mama can no longer fly together, they can be together—and that means everything.

A papa version is also available!
