ZERO TO THREE Critical Competencies for Infant-Toddler Educators™
The ZERO TO THREE Critical Competencies for Infant-Toddler Educators™ suite of professional development products and services enhance skills for educators and the trainers, faculty, coaches, and system leaders that support them, in flexible and user-friendly formats.
The Critical Competencies:
- Describe the recommended teaching methods and practices with easily understood guidance and examples
- Feature considerations for working with high-needs populations and multi-language learners
- Support educators who work in group settings (center-based and family child care homes) with infants, toddlers, or both
- Build on professional criteria for the early childhood field
Products and Services to Support PDG Activities
Online and In-person Courses: Explore all our Critical Competencies Professional Development options through the Learning Center, with a variety of options for group contracts, individual educators, professional development providers, higher education faculty, and more.
Trainer Certification: These programs formally recognize trainers who are dedicated to supporting infants, toddlers, and their families, and prepared and approved to deliver ZERO TO THREE curricula, including the Critical Competencies.
New! Coaching Program: This hybrid program (online and onsite) supports and enriches coaches’ knowledge of and capacity to integrate the Critical Competencies into their direct practice with early childhood educators and program leaders. Expert Faculty will guide a cohort of coaches through a five-part program which equips them to reflect on, practice, and advance the Critical Competencies.
Reflection Tool: This online tool uses the Critical Competencies to help infant-toddler educators examine areas of strength and opportunities for improving their daily interactions with children. Aggregate results support accurate learning targets and data-driven professional development decisions.
Technical Assistance: ZERO TO THREE’s experts use the Critical Competencies as a framework to help organizations and agencies meet their infant-toddler workforce goals. A range of services are available, including presentations; analysis and recommendations; and support for leadership, coaching, and training skills.

ZERO TO THREE Competencies for Prenatal to Age 5 Professionals (P-5)
The ZERO TO THREE Competencies for Prenatal to Age 5 (P-5) training is designed to help move the field toward a cross-sector approach to service delivery. To be most effective, the early childhood system needs to be coordinated, collaborative, and comprehensive. The P-5 model is designed to match the complex, interrelated needs and goals of our target population, and provides a foundation that supports work within and across relevant disciplines.
- builds shared knowledge, skills, and attitudes across service sectors;
- strengthens relationships among and between professionals;
- shifts participants’ focus to cross-sector and collaborative;
- articulates shared common core competencies; and
- provides clear examples and practical strategies for advocacy and leadership.
