ZERO TO THREE author, Dorinda Silver Williams, LCSW-C, has developed a third book for very young children. Sparrow is designed to support a young child whose parent/caregiver has been injured, physically or emotionally, while on deployment.

Sparrow (Papa version) tells the story of a young bird whose beloved parent has been away on a long journey. When Papa finally returns home, young Sparrow notices that he seems different. Papa is tired and weary and his wing is clipped. Papa and young Sparrow cannot fly together like they used to do. Everything is so different that young Sparrow begins to wonder if Papa’s feelings for him have changed as well. Papa reaches out, offering Sparrow the assurance that he needs; papa loves Sparrow, now and always. Sparrow learns that although he and Papa can no longer fly together, they can be together—and that means everything.

Who Is This Book for?

Sparrow can be used not only with military or Veteran families, but with any family that has experienced parental injury or illness, physical or emotional. The book explores core, universal themes relating to loss, healing, hope, resilience, and, ultimately, the power of parent-child love and connectedness in helping young children and their families cope with challenging events and circumstances.

FOR PARENTS:

Parents are encouraged to share Sparrow with their children whenever the time feels right for their family. The book is a story of love and healing that can continue to be shared as an opportunity for ongoing parent-child engagement and nurturance.

FOR PROFESSIONALS:

Sparrow is a resource for professionals who are serving injured military and Veteran parents of young children. Based on the nature of the themes that are addressed in Sparrow, ZERO TO THREE recommends that Sparrow be shared with parents in the context of a warm and trusting professional relationship. Professionals might consider sitting down with parents in order to process the feelings that might be elicited through the story. This professional-parent interaction can serve as an opportunity to assess parents’ readiness to share the story with their young children.
