Matthew Melmed, executive director of ZERO TO THREE, issued the following statement after the horrific attack at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas:

“Our hearts are with the families and faculty at Robb Elementary School and the entire Uvalde community. We are grieving with you during this tremendously painful time, especially in the wake of the racially motivated attack in Buffalo, New York.

All children deserve a strong start in life, and that includes a safe educational environment in which they can learn and flourish. As a nation, we have repeatedly failed to provide that safety, despite knowing the long-lasting and negative impact of traumatic experiences on children. Gun violence is currently the leading cause of death for children of all ages. We must stand together to end this scourge of gun violence that plagues this country. ZERO TO THREE commits to working with our partners day in and day out to advance policy solutions that protect children and keep our communities safe.

As the leading nonprofit dedicated to creating a society that has the knowledge and will to support all babies and young children in reaching their full potential, we are here to support healing from this tragedy. Parents, caregivers and early childhood professionals play a vital role in restoring and maintaining emotional safety. Our special resource hub is available online at to help adults meet the unique needs of infants and young children in addressing the effects of trauma in the aftermath of violence.

We must be there for one another and work together to prioritize the health and well-being of the youngest among us. Only then will we be able to build the world that our children need and deserve.“
