California's Accountability System - Desired Results for Children and Families (Birth to 13)

Desired Results for Children and Families is California’s system for monitoring and improving the results achieved for children ages birth to 13 and their families. The children monitored in the system are enrolled in early care and education programs as well as before- and after-school programs. The evaluation system is called desired results to represent the movement away from a process oriented compliance model to a focus on outcomes. The system was created by the Child Development Division (CDD) and the Early Education and Support Division of the California Department of Education (CDE). All CDE-funded child care and development programs are expected to contribute to six desired results: (1) children are personally and socially competent, (2) children are effective learners, (3) children show physical and motor competence, (4) children are safe and healthy, (5) families support their children’s learning and development, and (6) families achieve their goals.

To assess the desired results, programs must complete the Desired Results Developmental Profile-Revised (DRDP-R) assessment tool for each child every 6 months. Different versions of the DRDP-R have been developed for different age groups, including an I/T (infant/toddler) version for children not yet 3 years old, and a PS (preschool) version for children age 3 to kindergarten enrollment.

To support high-quality implementation of the program by center-based programs and family child care networks, the CDD and the Center for Child and Family Studies conduct regional trainings for local program administrators.
