WASHINGTON, DC, August 4, 2023Today, Miriam Calderón, Chief Policy Officer at ZERO TO THREE, released the following statement on the reintroduction of The Strengthening America’s Families Act (SAFA).

“The causes of child abuse and neglect are complex and demand comprehensive solutions that work to meet the real needs of families with infants and toddlers. The passage of the bipartisan Strengthening America’s Families Act (SAFA), re-introduced today by Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) and Gus Bilirakis (R-FL-12) in the House of Representatives.

SAFA would support state efforts to improve child welfare policy and practice to promote family well-being, prevent child abuse and neglect, and meet the urgent needs of babies experiencing maltreatment for all families involved in the child welfare system. Very few interventions or approaches are available to address the unique needs of babies and their families in the child welfare system. The re-introduction of SAFA is an important step in addressing the gap and I urge Congress to move this legislation forward as quickly as possible.”
