Almost 1 in 4 children under the age of five is cared for on a regular basis by a grandparent. In 2019, ZERO TO THREE conducted the first-ever national survey of grandparents who provide child care. We found grandparents love this connection to their families, but also face challenges in navigating the process of sharing the care. At the community level, grandparents fill the gap when child care is too costly or unavailable. Learn about the challenges they face, the benefits they experience, and ways you can support this “invisible” workforce.
