Through a $4.2 million grant from The Duke Endowment, Children’s Trust of South Carolina is working to activate the Positive Parenting Program (Triple P) in Georgetown and Greenville counties.
Through a $4.2 million grant from The Duke Endowment, Children’s Trust of South Carolina is working to activate the Positive Parenting Program (Triple P) in Georgetown and Greenville counties. This work is building a model prevention system that can be replicated across South Carolina to change the state’s approach to the prevention of child maltreatment. This innovative work will give South Carolina models for county-wide coordinated systems of prevention that gives a population-level approach to parenting and preventing abuse and neglect for the first time. With more than 35 years of ongoing research, Triple P is an effective, evidence-based parenting program. It offers simple, practical strategies to help parents build strong, healthy relationships, confidently manage their children’s behavior and promote positive child development. Triple P has been shown to work across cultures, socio-economic groups and in many kinds of family structures. Managed through a local coordinating agency, services will be provided to families by a variety of community-based service organizations including pediatric practices, nonprofits, libraries, schools and churches.
Triple P has five core principles:
- Ensuring a safe and engaging environment
- Creating a positive learning environment that helps children learn to solve problems
- Using assertive, consistent discipline that teaches children to accept responsibility for their behavior
- Having realistic expectations about children’s behavior
- Taking care of yourself as a parent to find balance in life
Recently, Children’s Trust of South Carolina took a deeper look into its programming to ensure the best options were selected to meet the needs of families in the state. The Triple P system of interventions was one of the top choices because it is designed to fit the differing needs of all families, is grounded in strengths-based messaging around parenting, and is shown to be effective in preventing child abuse and neglect across a community. The Children’s Trust of South Carolina believes that in order to keep children and families safe, organizations and communities must have the tools and the capacities they need for families. Through this grant, they are able to ensure the local supports are in place to foster this ongoing work now, and into the future.
