The Foundations to the Indiana Academic Standards for Young Children from Birth to Age Five are based on the latest national research and findings on child development.
The Foundations were developed in 2002 and revised in 2004, 2006, 2012 and 2015. The most recent revision was based on research, feedback from practitioners, and work from professionals with expertise in each specialized area. The revision conducted in 2015 also included public comments based in a review by 94 individuals.
The Birth to Three Years section of the Foundations outlines specific skills and concepts children acquire at different developmental stages and gives examples of instructional strategies adults can use to support healthy development in each area. The Foundations are intended to support teachers, parents, and caregivers as they develop appropriate experiences for very young children to help ensure success in kindergarten. The Foundations are now aligned with other Indiana educational standards and identify core foundations in each of the eight content areas.
