How Cultural Heritage Drives Racial Equity

Tomoko Wakabayashi, EdD is the Associate Professor at the Department of Human Development and Child Services at Oakland University. Dr. Wakabayashi talks about her Japanese heritage as the driving force behind her desire to support young children of Asian descent who struggle with their mental health as a result of racial discrimination. She touches on her work addressing the model minority myth, perpetual foreigner syndrome, and more. Spurred on by her desire to help her own kids make sense of their environments and tackle prejudice, racism, and stigma, Dr. Wakabayashi’s work is deeply personal and passionate.
