Shannon Bekman

Director, Right Start for Colorado , Mental Health Center of Denver

Shannon Bekman, PhD, IMH-E®, is a ZERO TO THREE Fellow. She is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist at the Mental Health Center of Denver and Director of Right Start for Colorado.

Dr. Shannon Bekman is a licensed clinical psychologist at the Mental Health Center of Denver and the Director of Right Start for Colorado, a SAMHSA-funded infant and early childhood mental health (IECMH) initiative aimed at expanding Colorado’s IECMH workforce and clinical services. She developed the Mental Health Center of Denver’s infant and early childhood mental health programming that brought to Denver much needed clinical services for children ages 0-5 and their caregivers, with an emphasis on the amelioration of trauma.

Dr. Bekman is a clinical instructor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine with the Harris Program in Infant Mental Health. She also serves as board president for the Colorado Association for Infant Mental Health. She has published on the topics of assessment and treatment of infant and early childhood mental health concerns. Dr. Bekman is passionate about serving young children who have experienced abuse, neglect, and trauma, and collaborating with all disciplines that touch the lives of very young children.

Dr. Bekman earned her PhD in clinical psychology from Arizona State University and her Master’s degree in clinical psychology from the Pennsylvania State University. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in infant mental health at the University of Colorado Denver. Prior to joining the Mental Health Center of Denver, Dr. Bekman was a trainee with Dr. Charles Zeanah’s “Infant Team” at Tulane University, which is a multidisciplinary team that evaluates and provides intensive intervention to maltreated young children.
