Wales Brown

Former Parent Educator, Northeast Parent & Child Society

In Memoriam. Wales Brown, MS, was a ZERO TO THREE Fellow (Class of 2014-16) who dedicated his life to helping parents build stronger, healthier connections with their children throughout upstate New York and beyond.

For nearly 30 years, Wales developed and implemented collaborative programs focusing on in-home preservation, parent education, and reunification of families with histories of abuse and neglect. His ability to connect with parents and children of varying backgrounds, his immense knowledge, and his dedication have led to state and national recognition in his field. He was a nationally recognized Certified Family Life Educator (National Council on Family Relations) and is a New York State Certified Senior Parent Educator. He also served on the Executive Committee of the National Parent Education Network (NPEN) where he was elected to serve a three-year term (2016-2019).

Wales’ personal and professional background made him uniquely qualified to work with the children and families of Northeast Parent & Child Society for the past 25 years. He was responsible for coordinating and teaching parenting groups for parents of children in different age groups through selected evidence-based curriculums. In addition to group processes, he provided intensive individual in-home consultations and was a clinician in a supervised visitation program, coordinating and coaching visits using a coached visiting model and working with birth parents to build parenting skills and parental bonding.

During his career, Wales worked in Ecuador, Egypt, and India in children’s residential facilities. He was also a founding member of the Leadership Training Initiative for people living with HIV/AIDS, developing programming to respond to the needs of those in underserved communities. Wales was a foster parent for more than a decade and was a single father of four boys with special needs whom he adopted. Wales was a strong social justice and fatherhood advocate.

Wales was a beloved member of his 2014-16 ZERO TO THREE Fellowship Class. His quick wit and joyful personality were lovely complements to his tireless voice for parents. Wales intimately understood the challenges and the resilience of families, particularly those most vulnerable. His fellowship class will identify a way to celebrate, in memoriam, the life and work of Wales Brown.
