Bringing Behavioral Health Into Maryland Pediatric Care: TPEC in Action

Discover how TPEC partners in Maryland are integrating behavioral health specialists and early childhood services into pediatric practices while developing strategies to support long-term sustainability.

In Maryland, partners in the Transforming Pediatrics for Early Childhood (TPEC) program are expanding access to behavioral health and developmental services by integrating behavioral health specialists into pediatric primary care. Through the High Five for P5 initiative, led by the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, seven pediatric practices across the state are implementing approaches tailored to their unique settings. Maryland TPEC partners provide technical assistance to help practices integrate evidence-informed early childhood programs, including HealthySteps, the Chicago Parent Program, and Mothers and Babies.

In this video, Maryland TPEC team members also share how their work is advancing integrated behavioral health services at both the practice and state levels. Through a statewide landscape analysis, the team has identified opportunities for sustaining and expanding services.

Their experiences highlight the importance of tailoring implementation strategies, strengthening cross-sector partnerships, and addressing financing and policy considerations to make comprehensive early childhood care a lasting part of pediatric practice.
