Infants, Toddlers, and Early Childhood Mental Health Competencies: A Comparison of Systems

The past few years have seen heightened interest in the mental health needs of infants, toddlers, and young children. This report analyzes the current systems in place to support the training and practice of service providers who work with young children and their families.

As interest increases in addressing the mental health needs of young children, so too has concomitant interest in supporting the training and practice of service providers who work with these young children and their families. Mental health training programs rarely offer specialized coursework in or practicum experience with the infant, toddler, or preschool age range. This report presents four main reasons why competency systems are needed for early childhood mental health, and compares the systems currently in place.
