Activity 16: Counting actions and objects

Materials:

Objects around the house

Try It Out:

  1. Count your child’s actions during daily routines like teeth-brushing and mealtimes. Say, “1, 2, 3 brushes on your teeth!” or “1, 2 bites of cereal” or “1, 2, 3 steps onto the bus!”
  2. When you see groups of 1, 2 or 3 objects, point to each and count aloud with your child: “1, 2 shoes.” Or, “1, 2, 3 library books in our bag!”

Making the Most of This Activity:

  1. Try the activity in different locations throughout the day, such as at the grocery store, in the library, and at home.
  2. Try it at bath time as you count body parts (1 nose, 2 feet, 2 hands).

Reflect:

Is your child able to count to 2 or 3? If not, focus on counting just 1 object. “1 banana.” “1 garbage truck.” Move up to groups of 2 once your child understands the idea of counting 1 object.
